The Empty Dance Card

A Memorial Day tribute to Pvt. William F. Wigand, the real-life inspiration behind the first Faery Girl Finds Muse and a love story interrupted by war.
Every outfit has a story.
The Faery Girl Finds Muses are inspired by curated fashion finds and the women who might have worn them. Most of their adventures are works of historical fiction filled with romance, mystery, courage, and imagination.
But today is Memorial Day.
Before our fictional Muses begin their journeys, we pause to honor a real hero and a real love story.
The ballroom glittered with flags, music, and relief.
The war in Europe was finally over.
Everyone said it was time to celebrate.
Kathleen tried.
She wore her favorite red skirt. Curled her hair. Accepted invitations to dance.
Around her, soldiers reunited with sweethearts. Couples laughed. Bands played songs that promised brighter days ahead.
But every time the door opened, her eyes drifted toward it.
Just in case.
Just in case Billy walked through.
For two years she had counted the days until the war ended.
She imagined the moment she would see him again.
The smile.
The embrace.
The life they would finally begin.
But Billy would never come home.
Pvt. William F. Wigand served as a paratrooper with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment during World War II. During fierce fighting in Belgium, he volunteered to cross open ground under enemy fire carrying ammunition to fellow soldiers. For his bravery, he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Less than two weeks later, on January 7, 1945, Billy was killed in France.
He was only nineteen years old.
The future he and Kathleen imagined together disappeared before it ever had the chance to begin.
As the orchestra played and couples filled the dance floor, Kathleen silently mourned the life they would never share.
Today, we remember Billy—not as a name in a history book, but as a son, a sweetheart, a soldier, and a hero.
Before our fictional Faery Muses begin their journeys, we pause to honor a real one.
May his sacrifice never be forgotten.
